There’s a lot media hype around Louisiana’s unemployment being so low. Since I’m a college graduate with an excellent work history who has been unemployed since October in spite of diligent efforts to find a job, I was suspicious. When I started looking I discovered a very important phrase: “Labor Force.” As it turns out, after you are unemployed for too long, you drop out of the labor force and cease to exist in unemployment data. These numbers are calculated and pulled straight from the census bureau and the Dept of Labor, but if you’d like to know more specifics feel free to ask.
